We could see that the burn pile was being disturbed.  And we saw the path used from the Alsea River into the yard.  But beavers work, mostly, at night.  So we set up the Wildgame  Innovations camera.  This beaver came 3 times last night.  HHhhhhmmm, maybe we won’t have to burn it after all?

Alsea River Mergansers
Alsea River -Mergansers

The duck out front is a female Common Merganser.  The one behind her is a male Hooded Merganser.  The other two are female Hooded Mergansers.

The Alsea River is so clear you can see the bottom.  But that is changing as I type I’m sure.  It is raining and rain is predicted for the rest of the week.  Highs in the low 40’s, low’s in the mid-30’s.  Snow down to 1500 feet.  We’re below that but we’re kind of in a sink hole that sometimes gets snow when no one else around us does.  We’ll see!

A heron decided to fish from the island.

A kid went out to the island in a kayak to fish. He beached the kayak, got out and scared a beaver out of his den as he walked up the beach.

The beaver ran out to the water and started splashing around, slapping his tail on the surface, to draw the kid away.  It worked, the kid made his way back to his kayak and paddled back across the river.  As soon as the boat headed away from the den, the beaver quit splashing and disappeared.  Animals are so smart!
