Central Oregon Coast Fun

This week, our son and 2-year old grandson were here for a short visit.  There is too much to see and do between Newport and Florence in a short few days but we gave it a good shot.  We played on Tillicum Beach, a wide, sandy beach between Waldport and Yachats.  Seals can be seen in the waves, pelicans fly in formation and we saw a bald eagle fly overhead.  Agates, shells, driftwood and sand dollars can easily be found.  But this is the first time I’ve ever seen a ladybug on the beach.  I can’t imagine there’s anything to eat out here.  Is she lost?

We decided to hit the proverbial birds by going to Strawberry Hill to see tidepools and harbor seals.  Strawberry Hill is in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area of the Central Oregon Coast.  There is a fairly steep walk down to the tidepools at low tide.  I stumbled upon them when we were just trying to get close to the seals.  All the standard tidepool critters are here.  Very fun!  If you want to navigate the rocks you can get close enough to the seals, to get to some good pix, without disturbing them.  They are really large animals and very curious.  Watching these harbor seals makes me wonder if they come here to watch the humans.

Grandma gave the kids tickets to the aquarium in Newport.  Lots of great displays and beautiful exhibits of all the local sealife.  This display is where kids, and adults, can gently touch them.  We touched abalone, green anemones, sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers and I can’t remember everything else!  Very fun!
