Entry for January 28, 2008

This is a Pacific Mole (or Sand) Crab.  Although if you look up “sand crab” on the internet, you get way more than pix of this crab.  The Mole Crab is only about an inch or two long.  I think seagulls like to eat them because we see them disassembled all over Tillicum Beach. We found this one at the edge of the surf line on the sand.  When he (or she) felt us touch him he drew up his feet and wouldn’t move. So we moved him to a wetter area.  Shortly after he felt the water around him, he started digging backwards down into the sand.  They leave a little divit in the sand behind them as they descend.
